Racism in Orange County in the Dental Practices?

I’d visit a dental office located in Laguna Niguel www.aestheticdentaldesigns.net called the office and explained to the office personal that I was just released from the Mission Hospital ER and I was suffering from servere tooth pain and was told that I needed a root canal from the ER Physician. I asked the receptionist over the phone if the dentist specialized in root canals and the office gal put me on hold, came back to the phone and stated yes that they specialized treating patients with root canals, she went on to say, if this is an emergency that I can be seen the same day.

When I arrived to the Dental office, the appearance of the office looked very exotic with a fancy construction build out something that reminded of a Star Trek movie. I’d notice the Dentist running around in the hall way making copies of documents while I was being entertained by his staff. I was called into a room 20 minutes from waiting in the lobby for X-rays. The technician asked where was I experiencing the most pain and she took X-rays of just three teeth and not the full mouth.

Within 35 minutes, the second gal who was the receptionist walked into the room. Before any treatments or X-ray explanations she begins a sentence with “She did not know what I could afford?” Apprehensively , she begin explaining the findings of the X-ray taken of the three teeth, however I could not understand what she was trying to convey because of her lack of experience reading X-rays. After not understanding the receptionist I’d demanded to speak to the dentist. The dentist finally walked into the room 25 minutes later with a nasty deposition and handed me a flyer of an African American boy who died of rotten teeth. I begin asking questions about the findings of the X-rays, and the dentist responded with a nasty smirk; his actions gave an impression as if he didn’t want to treat, or touch an African American.

He went on to explain the X-rays, and suggested that I should seek another dentist for general treatments and recommended that I should see a dentist that specialized in root canals. I’d asked the dentist for a prescription for pain the dentist in return begins to ask allot of unusual questions as if I was a street person who was a drug user. He hesitated to write the prescriptions and stated that he doesn’t get involved with giving patient prescriptions to medications. He continued to push the flyer in my face of the African American boy who died of rotten teeth because his mother could not afford dental insurance. The dentist went on to say that I would need a crown after the root canal and can be seen by any dentist! I begin asking the dentist about his fees concerning crowns, the dentist assumed because I was African American that I could not afford his dental services and printed an extra nominal fee of $2,200 per crown. His office charged me a consulting fee, close to $200 bucks for No treatment and phony Xrays.

Racism in Orange County in the Dental Practices?
well they sound very unprofessional and would be wise to not go back to them fools, but why would you goto an ER for tooth pain in the first place. hmm
Reply:Oh I am so sorry this happened to you. Remember you live in OC and as you know we are known for being "sue-happy" but this is a definite case for a law suit. I cannot believe this dentist would act in such an unprofessional manner %26amp; to top that, I don't understand why you paid him the $200--I would have walked out. You should definitely demand your money back and take this to the medical board he can get in some serious trouble by being discriminatory. He was completely out of line %26amp; you did not deserve this treatment at all.

I really hope that you pursue this and take action, remember if this happened to you then it is going to happen to others as well. You can be the first to put a stop to it. Age, race, color discrimination is illegal in any field, and that most definitely includes dentistry.

On a lighter note I hope your tooth is feeling better...get well soon!

Plant question

Please advise/information on what to do and what will happen.................?

I have not looked after my teeth very well at all and feel that is one of my biggest regrets in life. I am only 16, my teeth are crammed into my mouth, they are not straight, and a couple are rotten. I certainly intend to go to the dentists very soon. I understand the rotten teeth will be removed, however will it be possible to have braces after to solve the angle of my teeth? or will i have to wait for the teeth to move naturally first? lastly, could i be refused by an orthodontist?

Please advise/information on what to do and what will happen.................?
I would definitely consult a dentist on your options. Braces should be able to help with straightening your teeth after you've had some taken out. But definitely go see a dentist to have a full exam. They should be able to better advise you on this.

Should I say something to her?

The other day, There this thing going on at the library, I have a friend who has been looking for free stuff to do with her son this summer so I invited them to go with us to the library. We were getting ready to leave and I was standing there talking to her before we left ( she drove her own car ) and we heard her son telling my daughter that she had rotten teeth ( must have been the lighting because my daughter has perfectly healthy clean teeth ) then started calling her rotten tooth. I could tell that she was really embarassed so I went over and told her in front of him that her teeth were not rotten and that she has a beautiful smile and while i was talking to my daughter I was expecting my friend to say something to her son and she didn't, I was so POed. Should I bring this up when I talk to her next? and if so what should I say?

Should I say something to her?
First, I would tell your daughter that this boy is a retard if he thinks her teeth are rotten. Have her look at pictures of clean teeth and some of rotten teeth...ask her which set of teeth hers looks more like. Then tell her the boy was probably picking on her because he's got a crush on her and that's what some boys do with girls they like (punch them in the arm, make fun of them, dip their pigtails in an inkwell, etc.)
Reply:Just let it go. Kids will be kids. If it continues I would say something. Just remember, sometimes parents think that there children are perfect. So this could easily cause conflict between you and your friend if you said something. So just choose your words carefully.
Reply:Next time you talk to her ask her if maybe the next time her son name calls someone and is rude, she she actually give him some discipline. Okay, you could be a little nicer. But that is basically the point of what you should say to her. Good luck.
Reply:mom, i rily dont know how it feels cos i m not a mom but people v said awful lot of things to me n i jus stood thre wishin g my mom wld say" my love,u r not ugly or a monster but creatd in Gods image n prfection"tel ur kid u r proud of her n she shld neva let any one look down on her.cos God dint make no junk.n pls confront the othr kids mother to train up her boy.as they say charity begins at home.tk care
Reply:You should definitely bring this to her attention. By her not saying anything to her son she is basically telling him that it is ok to insult and hurt people. I would just tell her that it really bothered you that she didn't say anything to him especially when your daughter's feelings are being hurt. Not to mention it was overall a very rude thing to say.Hope this helps.
Reply:Don't buy into the "kids will be kids"crap. Kids will be rude if the parents does not speak up and correct the child. Shame on the mother for not letting her son know it was a rude comment to make. Personally, yes I would say something to the mother. "I just wanted to let you know, that comment your son said really hurt my daughters feelings, and since it was said, she has been really shy with showing her teeth" If she has any common sense, she should say sorry. If it were me, I would say sorry, then have a talk with my child about other people's feelings. But I would have said something to my child right then and there.
Reply:most definatley say something to her, you have been friends long enough for her to be open to conversation.

try not to put your daughter in his company too often, he obviously has quiet an impact on her.

in the mean time, take your daughter to a dentist. when he comments on how great her teeth are, she will be proud of them.

everytime she brushes her teeth, compliment her on how great they are looking.

when you take family photos, make a point of her flashing her pearly whites... all these little things can help boost her self esteem again, and feel comfortable about herself
Reply:Let this one go. Your daughter will forget in time.

As for next time a situation like this comes up try, "Wow, that was uncalled for. I got the last one, why don't you handle this one."
Reply:Try to have your daughter to stay away from him.
Reply:i would tell your friend to contact a professional. Personally, I would not take suicide lightly.
Reply:Let it go. I'm sure his mother was embarrassed. This not the first nor the last time her son has been rude. This is most likely ongoing behavior. Explain to your daughter that his behavior was rude and uncalled for and keep as far away from this little boy and his mother as you can. You don't need to have contact with them.
Reply:So a kid teased your daughter...GET OVER IT.

Kids and the dentist ....?

Who thinks thats parents/carers should be to blame for small kids rotten teeth . I know 2 kids both under 8 who had to have all teeth removed as they were all rotten . Who`s to blame ? It angers me to see children with bad teeth .... I mean small kids maybe 8 %26amp; under , the dentist reckons kids 8+ are able to clean their own teeth satisfactoraly . Don`t get me wrong even my kids have a filling but i mean really bad teeth and small kids need someone to keep them right and even help with brushing .I know this will opena can of worms as someone will mention may mention junk food etc but no matter what u eat as long as the teeth are brushed properly 2-3 times daily they should remain strong healthy teeth .

Kids and the dentist ....?
CHILDREN REQUIRING DENTAL EXTRACTIONSWITHOUT A MEDICAL EXPLINATION FORTHAT EXTEND OF TOOTH DECAY HAVE SUFFERED NEGLECT AT THE HANDS OF PARENTS OR CAREGIVERS WHO EITHER DO NOT KNOW HOW TO OR HAVE NOT SPENT ADEQUATE TIME CARING FOR THE CHILDS TEETH.

EXTENDED USE OF A BOTTLE OR BREAST TO GET A BABY TO SLEEP (EXTENDED GENERALLY MEANS OVER 1 YEAR) CAN CAUSE TOOTHE DECAY DUE TO SUGARRY LIQUID BATHING THE TEETH. ALSO FRUIT JUICES ie APPLE, PINAPPLE, ORANGE JUICE SHOULD ONLY BE GIVEN WITH MEALS AND TRY TO LIMIT TO 1-2 TIMES A DAY, FRUIT HAS NATURAL SUGARS THAT ROT TEETH SO SNACKS SHOULD ONLY BE 1-2 TIMES A DAY. eATING AND DRINKING SUGAR RICH FOODS SHOULD BE DONE IN ONE HIT, THE TODDLER WHO SUCKS HIS DILUTED JUICE AND EATS HIS APPLE OR RASINS WHILST PLAYING OVER AN HOUR LONG PERIOD IS BATHING HIS TEETH IN THOSE SUGARS AND NOT ALLOWING THE MOUTHS NATURAL Ph DEFENCES TO KICK IN. bRUSHING SHOULD BE NO MORE THAN 2 TIMES DAILY AS BRUSHING CAN ERODE ENAMEL AND BRUSHING SHOULD NOT BE DONE IMMEDIATELY AFTER EATING BECAUSE IT INTERFEERS WITH NATURAL Ph BALANCE. CHILDREN UPTO AND EVEN ABOVE 8 YEARS WILL REQUIRE HELP WITH BRUSHING, CHILDREN SHOULD SEE A DENTIST 6 MONTHLY FOR CHECK UPS. OK I'M CLIMBING DOWN OF THE SOAP BOX, IT IS DEFINATELY SOMETHING THAT ALSO MAKES ME ANGRY BECAUSE IT IS PREVENTABLE...........THAT IS WHY IT IS CHILD ABUSE AS A RESULT OF NEGLECT AND DENTISTS ARE HOPEFULLY REFERING THESE CHILDREN TO SOCIAL SERVICES FOR FURTHER INVESTIGATION. gREAT QUESTION !!!
Reply:i agree with u totally who's to blame for the kids rotten teeth the

parents, they should make sure they look after there teeth like they make them have a bath,,,,,,, if the parents do not look after there children they are rotten parents
Reply:Parents are totally to blame here. I used to work for NHS direct, and most people I spoke to had never taken their kids to the dentist. The excuses were "he's only four" or "well I'm scared of the dentist, so I'm not taking her". I asked the dental nurse when to take my son, and she said as soon as they get a tooth. this also helps them overcome fear if they go from an early age. I don't have a problem taking my boys to the dentist ( aged 9 %26amp; 6) and they know they have to brush twice a day. it aint rocket science.
Reply:Why would the parents be to blame? When I was a small child I had to have most of my baby teeth pulled because they crumbled away. It had nothing to do with what my parentd fed me or that they didn't show me how to brush properly. When I was growing up there was no flouride, when I was an infantI was on a lot of antibiotics due to chronic ear infections, and the antibiotics hindered the development of strong healthy baby teeth. So were my parents to blame for taking me to the doctor to get the antibiotics for my ear infections so that I didn't loose my hearing or worse die from an infection? Learn a few facts before you jump to conclusions...or make ASSumptions...because when you assume you make an ASSoutofUinfrontofMe and YOU are to blame for that.
Reply:I agree totally with you. Parents have to make sure that their kids eats less junk food, sweets and that they brush their teeth 2-3 times a week!
Reply:I agree, I hate hearing about 3 and 4 year olds who are having teeth removed - it has got to be the parents responsibility. Someone at school has been told her daughter has a small hole in her tooth that will eventually need filling (she is 4) and her mum STILL gives her sweets and fizzy drinks!! I suggested she give her sugar free sweets and stop fizzy drinks and she looked at me like I was mad!!
Reply:I completely understand where you are coming from. I know someone who allowed her son to walk around with his teeth decaying for months before doing anything about it, and of course he was also in pain. There was no excuse at all for it because we are military stationed overseas and get free dental care, and it's good quality care. One thing I hear from a lot of people is that it's okay for their kids' baby teeth to decay since they will fall out anyway, but this is totally unacceptable. Healthy baby teeth make for healthy adult teeth. I think parents are just lazy and wrapped up in other things. Even people who can't afford dental care can still afford a tooth brush and tooth paste, and most communities have some sort of assistance when it comes to providing dental care.
Reply:I don't know if I agree as I have four kids three have perfect teeth and one has bad teeth they all eat the same foods, but things are going to get worse as most dentists now are opting out of the NHS and people will not be able to afford to take their children to the dentist.
Reply:i agree with you.first family and then TV should help.
Reply:my children went to the dentist when they were six months old. they were afraid of him and now he takes his mask off when they go. my daughter recently went back for fissure seals on her molars to protect them, and went so far as to not let me in the room with her as she is a big girl now! (she is 6). i found that they were very independant with their teeth and wanted to do it themselves - so i would buy them two brushes each and i would do it first and then they would have a shot.

i have seen other children though that have gone to hospital to get all their baby teeth removed, and other children that have teeth that are simply black and full of holes. my mum had to have all her teeth removed and false ones put in when she was about 35 - and i remember how much pain it caused her. thats maybe why i try to make sure my kids brush their teeth.
Reply:There are the obvious cases where medical factors take over and I know you are talking entirely about cases that can be avoided. Of course tha parents/carers have to be responsible to oversee that the teeth are brushed properly. I think even 8 is quite young to stop supervision. My eldest is 7 and it is about a 60/40 split when I brush them and he brushes himself. If he got a cavity then I would blame myself. He obviously has to learn to do it himself and practice makes perfect, but until the day he can brush and then take a disclosing tablet that shows up no remaining plaque then I will continue on as I do.
Reply:Dentists can determine by the nature of the problem on whether parental neglect of oral hygiene education is at fault for rotten teeth. They can also tell if the child has a genetic abnormality which causes the teeth to be weaker than normal. They can also tell if the nature of the tooth problem is due to decalcification. They can also tell if antibiotics are to blame. Each problem creates different symptoms and different issues within the teeth and gums. Any experienced dentist can tell the difference.

Brushing and flossing every day is a must. Parents that fail to teach and enforce this should be held responsible for their children's excessively rotten teeth. Now, there's a difference between needing a filling, and needing endodontial work, periodontal work, crowns, etc at a young age due to decay. Cavities happen.

Trauma to the teeth are another story. My two front teeth required endodontal work and crowns after they were broken when I was tripped at a skating rink. These things happen and are at no direct fault of the parent. We can't entirely shelter children away from ever damaging their teeth.

What you eat has little bearing on your teeth as long as you brush, floss, and get in for regular cleanings.

Just removed wisdom teeth.Has anyone else experienced some secretion from your gums where tooth was removed?

I dont even know if it some kind of secretin but it tastes nasty. it coming from my back bottom tooth just one is like that. it tastes really nasty. tastes like bad breathe or like something rotten. I have no idea what it is. this seemed like it heeled in a different way because there wasnt really a whole. they probably just cut my gums and stitched it back together. i cant see it. i can just taste it. my other 3 holes are doing fine and none of this occured in them.

Just removed wisdom teeth.Has anyone else experienced some secretion from your gums where tooth was removed?
Yes. Drainage is typically normal. However, it could be from infection. If you have any other symptoms, like severe pain or fever, don't hesitate to get back to the dentist.
Reply:Yea , I know the pain your going through

Reply:Gee - that sounds real attractive!

How much does cat tooth extraction cost?

my roommate's cat had surgery today. they noticed she had 2 rotten teeth. one they were able to get out easily, the other was still in there. they called me while the cat was still under for permission to remove the tooth. i was unable to reach my roommate, so i made the decision to follow the vet's advice. how much more did i just add to his bill?

How much does cat tooth extraction cost?
Actually, you may have saved him money because his cat would have to have to tooth removed anyway. That would have costed him another visit, anesthesia %26amp; recovery. This way it was done all at once w/ everything else. Plus it was less stressful for the cat, it only had to be put under once.
Reply:Probably not much. The big part of the bill is the anesthesia. I am guessing maybe only another $20.
Reply:Your roommate cares about the cat or she/he would not have it at the vet in the first place. Rotten teeth can cause illness or even death in a cat. The tooth needed to come out! So you saved your roommate money because they did not have to take the cat back for a second trip.
Reply:This really depends on the vet. But if the vet was already in there, it probably added less than $100. If the tooth needed to come out, it was well worth it to tell them to do it. Those teeth can become infected and can cause major health problems in the cat. Taking the tooth out may cost a bit extra but can save hundreds of dollars in vet bills later on. I don't know exactly how much a tooth extraction costs, but I know a full dental with extraction for $300 is not unheard of. There is a base cost involved for anesthesia, equipment, etc but once they're in there additions are less costly. I wouldn't worry about it too much.
Reply:There is absolutely NO way of telling - vet practices all work in different ways, and prices vary hugely! If it was my practice though, we would not charge any extra for one more tooth.

I suggest you call the vet if you want to know the answer to this question, and ask what the bill is! I would think your friend would've said yes too - no point refusing necessary treatment if the cat is already under for that very thing.

Reply:My cat just had dental surgery.

I was given an estimate ahead of time, and was told that every "easy" extraction would be about $40, and every "difficult" extraction would be about $70. But I live in an expensive area, so it might be a little cheaper where you are.

I signed a form telling them they could do whatever was necessary to his teeth--but then again, his surgery was entirely dental. (They wound up removing his 3 remaining fangs, which were all considered easy extractions.)

You did the right thing. If the tooth wasn't removed, chances are the cat would have eventually had to go through surgery again to remove it, or he could get very sick. In the long run, you probably saved your friend money. At the very least, he should have made sure that the vet could get in contact with him during his pet's surgery.
Reply:My kitty had 4 teeth pulled last month. It only cost $120, but I think the vet gave me a good deal. My friend had 1 extraction done on her cat last year and it cost her $150. It doesn't matter how much it costs really, if it was making the kitty miserable then it had to be done. If it hadn't gotten that bad yet, it would have. You know how bad tooth pain is, you don't want your kitty to suffer. That is the responsibility you take on as a pet owner.

Alot of veterinarian's will let you make payment arrangements. Ask if your vet will.
Reply:You should of just saved yourself some money and pulled it yourself. Vice Grips or Pliers work very well.
Reply:I had a tooth removed on one of ours, for the proceedure it was $150 which included pre-operative, post operative, anesthetic, removal, machine use, payment per staff, etc.
