Why do so many British people seem to have reallly bad teeth and poor oral health?

I've noticed over many years of watching documentaries that an inordinate number of British subjects have very bad looking teeth. I'm sure genetics plays a part, but it seems to be the case that poor oral hygiene does also. I watched a special on the Windsors the other day, and noticed that socioeconomic status seems to have little bearing. Both the elite and the lower classes represented in interviews on this program had horrible teeth. They looked yellowed, half rotten, crooked, and a mish-mash of sizes, all in a single mouth. I've seen better teeth in the mouths of natives of third-world countries! What's up with that???

Why do so many British people seem to have reallly bad teeth and poor oral health?
I'm from British stock...Dental care is expensive...Many dental problems come from both genetics, diet (sugary foods, cola etc), hygein (or lack of), oral care (regular dental visits) and accidents (ie fight, playing sport).

No matter what cards someone is dealt, the reality is that most people don't go for regular check-ups (ie minimum of twice a year). That is a direct quote from the dentist. Most people on go when they feel "pain" often that is too late. The later you leave it, the more expensive it becomes.

I go to the dentist approx 4 times a year. I had bad genetics as well as a painful jaw disorder. I have paid a fortune to have good teeth, but despite my vigilant efforts since I was 18 (I'm now 35), the genetics will do me in and i have done all the right things! . Also, dental care is expensive and many people cannot afford it. They are stuck waiting years on public waiting lists for treatment, and many of the expensive treatments are not funded. Examples of how expensive dental care is: a check up and clean cost over $120, a filling $150-$350, crown $1200+, root canal $1000+, extraction $400 etc. On a final note, just because someone is "British" doesn't mean you will have bad teeth. It's a bit of a generalisation.
Reply:I think it has something to do with no flouride in the water? It may also be a genetics thing but I do remember reading something about their bad water and poor dental hygiene standards.

I think Americans can be the complete opposite lately. They tend to have oddly super white teeth. Almost glow in the dark.
Reply:that's funny
Reply:They hate to brush their teeth. I was roomies with one and boy she never brushed her teeth. Yuck

I have really ugly teeth?

OK so my teeth are really ugly, crooked, rotten, discolored, missing, growing out of weird places and is just a complete mess. I want to make a dentist appointment but I'm really scared because I have never been to one before and I'm 18 years old. The dentist won't tell me I have to have dentures will he? Because I absolutely do not want dentures and for implants don't you have to wait like 6 months after the teeth are pulled before it is done. I don't want to wait I want to be able to smile now because there is this guy I'm going to hang out with and I can't do it until I get my teeth fixed. can someone please help?

I have really ugly teeth?
Go to the dentist before it gets any worse. He will fix what he can and pull what he cannot. If you are worried about the pain--don't. You will be inconvenienced for a while but it will be well worth it in the long run.

It is better to have dentures than no teeth at all. Yes they can be a pain to take care of but you will feel so much better about yourself. My mother got all her teeth knocked out in her twenties and she has had dentures for 40 years--but you don't want to see her with no teeth in!
Reply:you have lots of isses going on!

if your teeth are rotten badly its better to have them pulled and replaced. and the replacements would be straight. they make partials that fill in areas -- you don't have to get a whole new set of teeth.

straightening teeth takes good old fashioned braces. that takes a couple of years.

why don't you try some hydrogen peroxide to whiten and clean them for now and go from there -- just put like a capful in your mouth and swish it around for about 10 mins -- like when you are showering. its also good for your gums if you have weak gums.
Reply:get it over with the dentist is only going to help you achive a perfect smile,,and u always meet that guy wenever and the sooner u get u'r teeth fix the faster u'r going to smile next 2 ur cutie!
Reply:Dont b afraid. jus get a dental appt n visit ur dentist. we wont b able to tell abt ur condition without taking a look at it. n ur condition might not b as bad as u describe it. dentists r there to help u n give u a better smile. so jus go for it. all the best to u.
Reply:Sounds like a real mess. See what he says %26amp; just do it. I'd kill myself %26amp; my teeth are crooked %26amp; yellow enough already %26amp; need a cleaning :(
Reply:Hi!

It's never late to take care of your teeth. It's normal to be anxious the 1st time ;) Since you have many areas to work on , i 'll try to answer your main questions, first. Yes you can have implants and new teeth at the same time (requires some health and bone conditions, but since u r 18 yo, it shouldn't be a problem), there are many ares you can work at the same time i.e whitening, fillings, crowns, and of course there are treatments that require more time like orthodontics. Share your story with your dentist, remember your dentist was 18 sometime too, so he/she will find the best way to get u as good as new with less discomfort for you.

Take care,

bye
Reply:he will ask you to plant new teeths and then put on braces... it will help... if you feel that your teeth are real rotten, the dentist will ask u to plant tooth.. but a whole replacement will hurts... i saw that at my dental's office... his posters showing how planting teeth.. eeww... it looks like real painful... but for the sake of looking handsome, i think you should give it a try... u must do either dentures or implants.. but trust me implants are better... u are still young... you got to face lots of people in the society, ur work place... you got to look presentable... my father has dentures as he didn't want to brush his teeth when he was young... he told me that he regret it.. imagine ur dentures fall off in the midst of talking to a client etc?

Perfect smile if you put on braces... i am on that now but luckily i don't need to pluck of any of my tooths as they are all adults... and braces hurts not need to ask for implants... the thought of having implants gives me horrible nightmares...
Reply:More you wait, closer you get to having your teeth pulled. Why didn't you go sooner?Nothing beats being 18 and having rotten teeth. That is really unattractive.Call today. They will numb you for everything, you won't feel anything.
Reply:why did your parents never take you to the dentist !!!!

Please go as soon as possible. The longer you wait the worse it will be, not to mention EXPENSIVE !! The dentist will take X-rays and evaluate what needs to be done. You'll be scheduled for a deep cleaning which will take two appointments. Once your teeth are clean for the first time in your life you'll probably be excited to get your teeth fixed and looking nice.

Reply:About a week ago I went to a dentist after not going for around 7 years. During the last 3 or 4 years I didn't brush my teeth, my teeth had gotten really bad, lots of rot, and I had fear of dentures. I've been wanting to goto dentist for past 2 or 3 years, but just been way too scared, and embarrassed on top of a ton of other reasons.

I finally decided I had to go. The sooner you go the cheaper it will be, the easier, the more teeth they can save, and the less chance you'll have serious health problems because of your teeth. Well I made an appointment, and then they called me back, I made a point of letting them know how bad my teeth were and how embarrassed I was before they looked in my mouth, they were very nice and I could not believe how easy it was actually going in for that first time. This is the day I had been fearing for the past 3 years? Losing sleep every night over this day?

Well that day the assistant took I believe it was around 16 x-rays, then I waited in the chair for about 10 minutes while they developed and the dentist looked them over. Then he came in and introduced himself, and made me open my mouth, he looked at my teeth one by one and said out loud to the assistant what was most likely needed to be done. The assistant made the list, then the dentist told me everything what was needed.

I was shocked, they were going to be able to keep all 32 of my original teeth, and I only need 3, maybe 4 root canals! And for the past 3 years I was thinking that I was going to need dentures... Just shows you that things aren't always as bad as they seem.

I went 2 days ago for my first appointment to get work done, it took about 3 hours, but I was way less nervous since I had already met who was going to be working on my teeth. It wasn't fun, but what made it soooooooooo much easier is that I knew I was getting my teeth fixed and it was soooooo worth it. During the appointment they did a deep root cleaning on the right side of my mouth, they also did fillings on 3 of my teeth, and a root canal on one of my molars. The root canal was way easier and less painful then I thought it would be. They gave me a prescription for vicodin to help with any pain, which has been VERY minor, just a little sore.

Now I can sleep better knowing my teeth are finally going to get fixed =) I beg you to go in for the first appointment at very least. You'll know exactly what can be done, and you can make decisions from there. If you have any questions for me please email me at equnlimited1@comcast.net, I'd love to answer them for you. Seriously a huge weight will be lifted off your shoulders!

Dreaming that teeth falling out!?

I always dream of my teeth falling out from being rotten and breaking. they slowy chip away and break off bit by bit and i wake up in a panic and first thing i do is touch my teeth. I dont believe its a "spiritual reason" why this dream occurs coz i know that heaps of people have this dream.

just want to hear of your craziest "teeth falling out dream"......

Dreaming that teeth falling out!?
I frequently dream of teeth falling out. Either that, or there is something stuck between my teeth, like dental floss, and I keep pulling and pulling it out (like yards at a time). I usually chalk it up to a worse-than-normal night of tooth grinding in my sleep.
Reply:Dreams that your teeth are falling out are the most common dreams we here at Dream Moods receive. Common dream scenarios include having your teeth crumbling in your hands or your teeth falling out one by one with just a light tap.Such dreams are not only horrifying and shocking, but often leaves the dreamer with a lasting image of the dream. So what does it mean?

One theory is that dreams about your teeth reflect your anxiety about your appearance and how others perceive you. Sadly, we live in a world where good looks are valued highly and your teeth play an important role in conveying that image. Teeth are used in the game of flirtations, whether it be a dazzling and gleaming smile or affectionate necking. These dreams may stem from a fear of your sexual impotence or the consequences of getting old. Teeth are an important feature of our attractiveness and presentation to others. Everybody worries about how they appear to others. Caring about our appearance is natural and healthy.

Another rationalization for these falling teeth dream may be rooted in your fear of being embarrassed or making a fool of yourself in some specific situation. These dreams are an over-exaggeration of your worries and anxiety.

Teeth are used to bite, tear, chew and gnaw. In this regard, teeth represent power. And the loss of teeth in your dream may be from a sense of powerlessness. Are you lacking power in some current situation? Perhaps you are having difficulties expressing yourself or getting your point across. You feel frustrated when your voice is not being heard. You may be experiencing feelings of inferiority and a lack of self-confidence in some situation or relationship in your life. This dream is an indication that you need to be more assertive and believe in the value of your own opinion.

In the latest research, it has been shown that women in menopause have frequent dreams about teeth. This may be related to getting older and/or feeling unattractive and less feminine.

Traditionally, it was thought that dreaming that you did not have teeth, represent malnutrition which may be applicable to some dreamers.
Reply:That dream means poor health. If you see all of your teeth fall out, that can mean very serious illness, even death.

Take care.

I'm 12 and I have a loose adult tooth that's kinda rotten. Can I just pull it out?

It's pretty wobbly and it's next to my 2 big front teeth. I have a lot of teeth missing already and this one is hurting a lot. I don't think 1 more missing will matter that much. I just want to know a way to do it without it hurting any more than it already does.

I'm 12 and I have a loose adult tooth that's kinda rotten. Can I just pull it out?
Don't think that one won't make a difference, because it will. Get to a dentist, and if you can't afford one, check into a clinic.
Reply:You need to see a dentist and get all of your teeth checked. Your teeth should not be rotting when you are only 12. Something is going on so see your dentist ASAP and get your teeth checked out.
Reply:A pint of Jack Daniels and a pair of pliers.....Would'nt want to be you in the morn..Go for it no pain no gain!!!!!!!!!! I don't have that problem look at my teeth CHEEEESSE
Reply:Don't pull it out yourself! Go to a dentist. It will hurt a lot more if you pull it out yourself than now. You will also bleed a lot. It is because your nerves and blood vessels are still conneted to that tooth. Try to brush better too, it will help you from having any more of your teeth start to rot until you go to a dentist.
Reply:Sounds like it's going to come out whether you pull it out or not. I say go for it.
Reply:go to the dentist and get him to do it properly. use a general anaesthetic if need be.
Reply:NO!!!!!! Most people only get one set of adult teeth and you are only 12. You need to be seen by a dentist ASAP. If you don't have dental insurance; or the funds to take care of it - seek out a dental clinic for the indigent. It is extremely important that you save your adult teeth.

Many people assume they can just replace their teeth with dentures; what they don't realize is that dentures take their toll on your gums and if you start wearing dentures at an early age, you may not have a dental ridge left to hold false teeth by the time you're 50. Then what? Are you going to spend the next 25 years with no teeth?

Also, the state of your dental health affects the health of your entire body. Please see a licensed dentist ASAP.
Reply:you shouldn't pull out a rotten tooth, because it will be real painful if you do that.see a dentist to help let it out less painfully.
Reply:do the dental floss and slam door trick .haha i did that 1 time. do reason to spend 500 when u can pull it out ur self!!!!! hell pull them all out and get screw in teeth !!! ya wont have to worrie about it then!!!!
Reply:Oh honey ....NO!!!!!!!!

#1: why is it wobbly ...did you hit it, or is it due to the cavity or decay? But ,no matter what the reason, yes ....one more missing tooth DOES make a difference....very much... Your teeth ...each one, is there to perform a certain function and you need to make sure you can't save it ......at the dentist.

#2: if it must be removed, due to your detist saying he can't save it, or if your parent's can't pay for it to be fixed..... you need to have it done....removed.... by a dentist....there are roots and nerves involved in the tooth, and you could get started and not be able to finish.......and it may be dangling by roots.....you can cause serious pain even in your chin ...if you screw up something while pulling it out of the gumline.....or leave part of the tooth in there and that can cause a nasty infection............please see your dentist.....Are you sure all these teeth you are missing are ADULT teeth? My 12 year old son is still set to lose some baby teeth he still has....he was convinced he'd got all of his adult teeth....until his next dentist visit.... and they showed him his mouth xrays with new teeth getting ready to pop through the gumline...I kow bad teeth or cavities hurt...ask an adult to let you take some Tylenol or Advil till you can get to the dentist and get it drilled and filled.......that's what they do...is help you save the tooth....yes they are expensive.....but it might just be a baby tooth that he can just pull out for you if it's decayed. or it could be an adult tooth that only needs a small ...less expensive... filling. It will hurt if you try to yank it out......it might be infected...which most dentists will want you to take an antibiotic before they pull it................don't listen to the dork that said a pint of beer and pliers....you are too youg to drink....and you cannot pull it with a pair of pliers.....even if you tried to ...the tooth sounds weak and it'll break possibly and you'll be left with the base of the tooth in the gumline and have to have surgery to get it out. And i bet it is infected....please go to a dental clinic...or the nearest children's hospital emergecy room that has a dentist on call.....they have to help you whether your parents can pay or not.....where are your parents ...I feel so sorry for you going through this and having to ask strangers on the internet what to do.. Call 911 if you have to, and tell them when they arrive you are in MISERY!!!!!!

Good Luck sweetie....I feel for you. I'm experienced with teeth issues.
Reply:SUZIE,

THE IDEAOF PULLING YOUR OWN TOOTH MIGHT SOUND GOOD TO YOU. BUT THIS IS NOT A GOOD IDEA. LET THE DENTIST TO THE JOB AND DO IT RIGHT.

ps only baby teeth come out with a string and door, lol
Reply:yeah, dental floss %26amp; doorknob works.like Dr.Pepper says, hell pull 'em all, then you won't have no more problems with bad teeth. I use to have bad teeth too but I got rid of all of mine and I'm glad I did.
Reply:Yeah, if it's really loose you can get it out with string and give it a quick jerk or slam the door with it tied to the knob. I took a couple of mine out that way when they were really loose. I had gum problems that made my teeth loose tho and I lost quite afew before I had them all pulled out. Hope that's not happening to you already at 12 years old. You're pretty young to be havin no teeth, but then I'm only 16.
Reply:Where's your parent's !?! They should be knowing this about your teeth and making appointments for you every year for check-ups! If you were seeing a dentist every year, you wouldn't be having these problems because they would have found it early. Definitely don't pull it out!!!! It can be saved in most cases depending on why it's loose. Please alert your parents to this problem. You shouldn't have to ask a website for help if you have parents to care for you. If your parents don't care, tell your school nurse for help. Good Luck!!

I just found out i have a tooth that is so rotten that it needs to be pulled, and also TMJ in the same week..?

i never had TMJ before, i don't think, and i'm in excruciating pain almost constantly. i need to know if getting the tooth out will help the pain go away. basically, could the tooth be causing the TMJ? i'm so confused cuz they happened at the same time. the pain is very severe and is in my neck, jaw, ear, and teeth around the cavity.

thanks

I just found out i have a tooth that is so rotten that it needs to be pulled, and also TMJ in the same week..?
throo experience the tooth dont hurt when it comes out and it is likely to stop the pain and if it doesnt sort out the TMJ then the dentist will know a way to sort it out

HELP!!! I'm 35 weeks pregnant and my teeth are rotting and chipping away!!! What's going on!!! Will it stop???

I always had great teeth and today I noticed a rough spot on the back of my bottom front teeth and noticed a little piece of my tooth had chipped off. Then I saw the sides of my teeth looked a little rotten and when I took my nail across that piece of my tooth came off!!! Is this going to continue on until I have nothing left of my teeth??? I take my prenatel vitamins everyday, and drink alot of milk. I have a doctors appointment in 2 weeks. Need some advice now. Thanks in advance.

HELP!!! I'm 35 weeks pregnant and my teeth are rotting and chipping away!!! What's going on!!! Will it stop???
Pregnancy can have a little effect on teeth, but not that much. It sounds like you have a more serious problem, like periodontal disease or just a whole lot of decay. Go get checked out by a dentist.

Dont listen to everyone else. The amount of nutrients that the baby is taking, is no where near enough to cause your teeth to chip and break. If you take other medicines, it can cause dry mouth. This will cause your teeth to decay rather rapidly. You could just need a cleaning. It might be the hardened plaque (called calculus) chipping away. People often think this is there tooth. There are a lot of things, just go get an exam.
Reply:Thank you so much for your educated answer. I actually researched the calculus and I think that's what it was. I am now taking calcium pill and no more chips. My teeth are doing very well. Report It

Reply:In all likelihood your teeth were rotting prior to pregnancy, but now that you are pregnant and the nutrition is going to the baby, it is all that more evident. Your first priority is always the baby and you should ask your OB-Gyn when the best time is for you to go to the dentist and do it ASAP. No xrays for you, but at least start getting things under control. Vitamins are great but they can't fix what is already broken.
Reply:Make an emergency appointment at the doctors/dentist!
Reply:The baby is using up your calcium!

Have no idea why your vitamins and milk aren't helping.
Reply:congradulations first of all.... being pregnant can actually cause tooth/teeth decay...its kinda like not ever being diabetic until you get pregnant (not trying to scare you). it is rare for you to start getting cavities while pregnant but its not uncommon. your fetus is getting all of the neutrants it needs thats all. and just incase youre wondering....it is perfectally safe for you to have dental x-rays and procedures done while being pregnant, and in a lot of cases that ive seen, most insurances will pay for the dental procedures while youre pregnant
Reply:When I was pregnant, I started to get gingivitis. It is most common for teeth to start to rot or move slightly or whatever when pregnant. I recomend going to the dentist. I know someone on here said that they will give x-ray while pregnant but the experience I have had proves otherwise so do not expect that. The dentist can give you calcium medication and such to help out where it is needed. Teeth are not the only thing that can get affected by a pregnancy also. I got gestational diabetes while pregnant. Just take care of yourself and eat healthy.
Reply:Mild won't do anything to your teeth other than rot them if you keep milk in your mouth long enough. Milk has acid.

If the enamel came off then you do have caries or a cavity.

Get it filled asap before the baby. If not, you won't once you have the baby (no time/lower priority)
