I've just been told that my dog has one bad tooth, up the top at the left. I'm bemused by this, because his teeth look to be in healthy order at the front, and he has always had a good quality diet, and is never allowed to eat crap. In fairness, I've never actually brushed his teeth, because I didn't think I had to during the first year (because they lose their teeth anyway)...can someone shed some light on this!? Is it a sign of something more sinister?! Or is it usual to have one rotten tooth and for the others to be fine!?
He is 12 months old and is a German Shepherd.
Dog's Rotting Tooth?
No not normal at all! You need to have the vet look at it, and possibly get it removed. A rotting tooth harbours all kinds of bacteria, plaque, and diseases. All this can drain down your dogs throat and seep into his body, eventually making him very sick.
Reply:aw, the poor thing! he should go to the doctor now! asap! that tooth has got to get better or get pulled out!!!! then he can play with all the chew toys he wants!
Reply:Animals need their teeth cleaned just like humans or they can go bad. (Even with the best quality food) That is why you bring them in for dental cleanings (and xrays) to keep their teeth strong and healthy. When their teeth gets tarter and all the bacteria can go into the bloodstream and cause infection to the heart and other organs. Being in your case your dog is at the age that she might need a good cleaning but if it has a bad tooth as well it could be genetics. Your vet is right so trust them and have it done before the infection spreads in the body and that the bad tooth doesnt cause pain in the mouth just how we can suffer a tooth ache.
Reply:My cat had the exact same situation. Well, maybe not the same tooth, but she had one rotten tooth when she was very young - about a year or so. She is now 7 years old and has never had anymore dental problems. You do need to have the tooth removed though - as soon as possible. It could have just been a bad tooth to begin with and eventually rotted. Just start brushing those teeth and keep an eye out, but hopefully it will be okay like it was for my kitty.
Reply:Periodontal disease can affect your dog's teeth, even if they look fine. The most common sign of periodontal disease is plaque and tartar buildup on your dog's teeth. if your dog is only 12 months old, it's unlikely that this is the problem, but still possible. Take him to the vet; he might need to have the tooth removed. Don't wait for it to get worse; it could be causing him a lot of pain when he eats. Animals will continue to eat even with painful teeth, but if he stops eating, it's very serious pain he's dealing with.
Also, try to start brushing his teeth. This is the best way to prevent tooth problems from occuring in the first place.
Reply:Some Treats can help clean and fix teeth, but if it's really bad, then the dog should see a vet for making sure. Ask them questions and get some answers
